Reed beds management
doesn't require skilled labour or continuous controls but it's recommended
a minimum management through a few simple steps outlined below.
- Septic tank
and grease trap control. It is essential for the smooth functioning
of the reed bed to periodically empty your septic tank and grease
trap by calling a specialized company: escaping of sludge, foams oils
and fats would cause the clogging of the initial part of gravel and
the inlet pipe obstruction.
Periodicity: 12 moths (supposed a minimum capacity as designed).
- Inlet sump
and inlet pipe control. If you should notice muddy material inside
the inlet sump or in the initial part of gravel near the inlet pipe:
- immediatly control the septic tank and the grease trap and, eventually,
empty them
- remove muddy material from the inlet sump
- if the inlet pipe in the plant was obstructed, move the nearby gravel
and remove muddy material.
Periodicity: 6 months.
- Weeds control.
Especially in the early months weeds may take root on the reed bed
surface inhibiting aquatic plants growth: in this case simply eradicate
the weeds.
Periodicity: 2 months during the first year, 6 months under normal
operation.
