The reed beds (constructed wetlands) technique is a natural system for wastewater treatment. It consists of a waterproof basin filled with gravel and vegetated with aquatic plants. Purification is made by means of a combined action between pebbly substrate, plants, wastewater and microorganisms. This system works without using additional power and therefore it doesn't use electro-mechanical components. This allow us to define it "ecoconsistent". Well-designed reed beds allow a fall of the incoming organic load greater than 90%. In plants designing we consider a daily flow rate of 200 liters, an organic load (BOD5) of 60 gr per person and an incoming pH between 6 and 8,5. |

A subsurface flow constructed wetland is executed by means of a basin excavation of wich dimensions depends on the flow rate and the type of wastewater. The basin is then covered with a PVC waterproofing system (Initram Srl patent). Once the basin it's been waterproofed, it is filled with selected gravel on which the aquatic plants will be set. The water level inside the basin is continuously mantained 10-15 cm below the gravel surface by means of the level regulation system placed next to the exit. The plant is treadable and the water does not seep to the surface. In this way the complete lack of odours and insects is guaranteed. |

SUBSURFACE FLOW REED BED SCHEME
In order to achieve an optimal functioning of the reed bed wastewater must be pretreated so that solids, soapy substances and other materials can be retained. |
